Research Facilities & Services

Plant Research Centre

The School of Agriculture, Food & Wine has facilities and services for the aide of research both internally and externally.

These services are provided at either Roseworthy or Waite depending upon the requirements.

View the services each group can provide by selecting an option from the menu to the left.

Biotechnology and Fermentation Facility

In yeast research, the practicalities of monitoring culture flasks for fermentation progress manually (eg. 3 - 6 hourly for 4 - 14 days), means that experiments managed by a single researcher are quickly limited to around 20 flasks. We therefore developed an automated fermentation system to allow fast throughput of fermentation trials. The present facility largely eliminates the need for manual sampling of cultures by automated logging of weight loss due to CO2 evolution from the fermentation of sugars.

Membrane Transporter Expression Facility

The MTEF enables expression of genes (plant or animal) in a cell system (Xenopus oocytes) that can be robotically screened for various membrane transport activities and has applications in drug discovery and protein engineering.

The Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Science Laboratory

The Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Science Laboratory is located on the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide.
Research Interests are:

  • Viticultural practices influencing grape and wine quality
  • Grape and wine aroma and flavour components
  • Pigments and tannins in grapes and wines
  • Influence of fermentation regimes on micro-organism derived aroma and flavour components
  • Grape and wine composition
  • Distillation technologies related to alcoholic beverages, essential oils and botanical flavourants

The Plant Accelerator

The Plant Accelerator at the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide, is a world-leading plant growth and analysis facility, which will accelerate pure and applied plant science research Australia-wide and internationally. For more information, please visit the Plant Accelerator website.

Waite Analytical Services

Waite Analytical Services (WAS) is a University based research support laboratory conducting state of the art elemental analysis, specialising in trace element analysis of plant material.

Located in the heart of one of the world's leading agricultural research precincts, Waite Analytical Services has developed proven methods that offer customers unrivalled accuracy in plant analysis.

Waite Diagnostics

Waite Diagnostics aims to utilise the best technology from the most recent research for direct application to rapid, sensitive and reliable detection of grapevine pathogens.

WIC Winemaking Services

WIC Winemaking Services, located on the Waite campus, offers consistent small- and pilot-scale quality wines for research and commercial projects to aid grape and wine researchers and the Australian wine industry. With fully qualified winemaking staff and dedicated facilities, the service provides the opportunity to outsource R&D projects for viticulture, winemaking or processing treatments. A small amount of contract winemaking of less than one tonne is also offered for commercial ventures. WIC Winemaking Services operates on a fee-for-service basis.
